CLASS and MECHANISM of Action

Generic Fosamax is a drug that belongs to a class called bisphosphonates. This medicine acts as a specific inhibitor of osteoclast-mediated bone resorption. Generic Fosamax is used to strengthen bone. Bone is in a constant state of remodeling, whereby cells called osteoclasts remove old bone, and cells called osteoblasts lay down new bone. Generic Fosamax inhibits bone removal by the osteoclasts.
Active Ingredients: Alendronate sodium.
Inactive Ingredients: cellulose, anhydrous lactose, croscarmellose sodium, and magnesium stearate.

What is Generic Fosamax PRESCRIBED For?

Generic Fosamax is prescribed for the purpose of reducing hypercalcemia in tumor-induced bone disease. Generic Fosamax can be administrated in order to prevent osteoporosis in postmenopausal women.

How Should I Take Generic Fosamax?

Generic Fosamax should be taken orally commonly in the morning. Do not eat or drink anything before you take your tablets and do not eat breakfast, drink, or take any other medicines for at least 30 minutes after taking Generic Fosamax. Swallow the tablets with a full glass (68 fluid ounces) of plain water first thing in the morning. Do not take Generic Fosamax with any other type of liquid except plain water. Do not chew or suck on the tablets; this may cause mouth ulcers (sores).
After taking this medicine, remain sitting or standing upright (do not lie down) for at least 30 minutes to avoid irritation of your throat and esophagus (tube connecting mouth to stomach).

Do not store in the bathroom. Moisture can cause the drug to break down.

What are the CONTRAINDICATIONS for taking Generic Fosamax?

Generic Fosamax is contraindicated to women that are pregnant or plan to be pregnant. This medicine passes into milk. Therefore Generic Fosamax is contraindicated to women that are breast-feeding.
Generic Fosamax is contraindicated to persons that have an allergic reaction to this medicine or any its ingredients. Persons that have low levels of calcium in their blood or severe kidney disease should not take Generic Fosamax. Patients with certain disorders of the esophagus (the tube that connects your mouth with your stomach) and inability to stand or sit upright for at least 30 minutes cannot be treated with Generic Fosamax.

What Happens if I MISS A DOSE?

If you miss a dose, do not take it later in the day. Continue your normal schedule starting the next morning, before you have eaten.
NOTE: Do not take double or extra doses.

What happens if I OVERDOSE?

Hypocalcemia, hypophosphatemia, and upper gastrointestinal adverse events, such as upset stomach, heartburn, esophagitis, gastritis, or ulcer, may result from oral over dosage If an overdose is suspected call your local emergency immediately.

What other drugs can INTERACT with Generic Fosamax?

Patients with significant kidney conditions should not take Generic Fosamax, because this medicine can lower blood calcium. Calcium supplements, antacids and medications can interfere with the absorption of Generic Fosamax. It is important that you get enough calcium and vitamin D while you are taking Generic Fosamax.
Lifestyle changes that help promote healthy bones include increasing weight-bearing exercise, eating well-balanced meals containing adequate calcium and vitamin D, stopping smoking, and limiting alcohol.

Additional Information

Remember that Generic Fosamax should be taken with at least 6-8 ounces of water. Food, drinks, and other drugs (including vitamins, calcium, and vitamin D) should not be taken for at least 30 minutes after taking Generic Fosamax.
